Stroopwaffels are a Dutch specialty. The stroopwafel consists of two pieces of waffle filled with caramel syrup. The traditional ones are made with two waffles and caramel, but nowadays you can find revisited ones, with MMs or smarties.

There are specialized shops all over Amsterdam, but you can also find them on the shelves of supermarkets near you.

History

This specialty was invented in 1784 in the town of Gouda. A baker took two wafers and stuck them together with caramel mixed with leftover spices, like cinnamon for instance. These stroopwafels were sold to the poor.

We tested for you the homemade stroopwafel by the charming shop Van Holland stroopwafels, Kalverstraat 198, 1012 XH Amsterdam.

You can find the traditional stroopwafel sold in beautiful boxes but also revisited stroopwafel (MMS, speculos, kitkat, oreo,...).

Our adventures

We then looked for places where we could buy stroopwafels near our accommodation in Hillegom. We opted for a traditional bakery because Google suggested supermarkets, but we wanted homemade stroopwafels.

However, we were ripped off because the bakery didn't sell them and the baker directed us to the cake section of the supermarket. So we bought them anyway, even though they were industrial. Nevertheless, the stroopwafels were delicious and reminded us of some cakes we have tasted before. The waffles were crunchy and the caramel melting.

Always keen to try homemade food, we went to Amsterdam to buy some in the Van Holland shop. The salesman was very friendly and his explanations were clear. Cyrine left with stroopwaffels in a beautiful white and blue box. And here are two satisfied French women!

We immediately noticed the difference, the waffles were crisp as you wish, the caramel was enhanced with cinnamon, which gave a better taste. It was well worth it!

Stroopwafels are eaten as a dessert but also as a breakfast or snack!

Your turn !
