Poffertjes are an essential Dutch dessert. They are mini pancakes made with yeast and buckwheat flour. They are served with powdered sugar and butter.

History
The origins of this pastry are not clear. There are two hypotheses: the recipe was either developed in a monastery as a variant of the host, or in France where monasteries had to use buckwheat flour after a battle in the region near Bordeaux in 1795, and the recipe was then taken to the Netherlands. Nevertheless, it is quite likely that the recipe was invented by chance with a small amount of pancake batter.
We have tested poffertjes at this address: The Pantry, Leidsekruisstraat 21, 1017 RE Amsterdam.
Our review
The stroopwafels left us speechless! The combination of the softness of the mini-pancakes with the melting of the butter and the sweetness of the icing sugar was just perfect! It ended on a positive note.
